IKM-Manning teacher Jenni Erb remembered for big heart

Every day, Jenni Erb would see IKM-Manning day custodian John Koester in the school hallway, and the two of them would race to say the same phrase first:
“Has anyone told you how wonderful you are yet today?”
Koester will miss that small competition of kindness.
Erb, a family and consumer science teacher at the IKM-Manning Community School District, died Wednesday after a medical emergency sent her to the hospital early this week. She was 42.
Erb, an Audubon graduate, taught middle- and high-school students. She was a co-sponsor for the high school Student Council and assistant director for the high school musical and was involved with the high school’s Silver Cord community service program.
She and her husband, Kevin, had four kids: Jonathan, Joey, Rachel and Jesse.
For Paige Sybesma, Erb, her teacher and later her friend, was a lifeline as she navigated high school’s bumps in the road and later joined the military and was deployed to Afghanistan.
When Sybesma was deployed, Erb sent care packages and sewed Sybesma a pillowcase that she carried with her.
“When I came home on leave, she was one of the first people I made a point to see,” Sybesma said.
Sybesma, 24, graduated from IKM-Manning in 2012. She recalled a disastrous project in Erb’s family and consumer science class where she was supposed to deconstruct and remake a dress — and failed miserably. Rather than getting frustrated, Erb laughed and helped her through the project.
IKM-Manning had counselors available at the school Thursday and Friday for students needing to talk.
“We encourage you to talk with your child,” Superintendent Trevor Miller said in a districtwide message Wednesday. “How we, as adults, manage ourselves serves as an important model for helping kids handle tragedies like this. It is important that they know they are loved and supported as they talk about their feelings.”
Sybesma organized an online fundraiser for Erb and her family after Erb went to the hospital earlier this week. The fundraiser is available here.
A visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. Sunday at the IKM-Manning gym, and again starting at 1:30 p.m. Monday. Erb's funeral will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday at the IKM-Manning gym.
“She had more room in her heart for anybody, and she never let anybody feel alone,” Sybesma said. “If you were an outcast, you could go into her classroom and talk to her, and everybody was equal. Everybody was the same. She loved every single student the same.
“It’s a pretty tragic day for our community.”

A recent Iowa State University report shows a third consecutive year of increases in the number of businesses reporting sales tax in both Carroll and Carroll County, despite a decrease in populations for both since about 2011. Carroll County had 867 firms reporting more than $604 million in sales, while the City of Carroll had 517 firms with a total of $241 million in sales. The closest Carroll County communities in 2017 retail sales were Manning with 76 firms reporting $15.1 million in sales, Coon Rapids with $10.8 million in sales from 63 firms and Breda, who reported 36 firms with sales topping $10 million. The report says the population decline is seen in other communities and counties of like size, but Carroll continues to see wage and salary increases for the area. Carroll County has a worker inflow of 4,458 people, mostly from Crawford, Greene and Sac Counties, and an outflow of 4,362, mainly to Polk, Crawford and Woodbury Counties.

April is donate life month, and Manning Regional Healthcare Center (MRHC) is partnering with the Iowa Donor Network to bring more information on the importance of organ donation to the general public. They will be hosting a free community event, Coffee and Conversation: Organ, Tissue and Eye Donation, on Friday, April 27 in the MRHC conference room. This will be an opportunity to learn more about how the decision to become a donor can impact the lives of others and also to dispel the myths surrounding organ donation. Currently, about 69 percent of Iowans are registered donors, but the number of people needing transplants continues to outpace that percentage. There are more than 715 Iowans who are right now waiting to receive a life-saving donation, and unfortunately, many of those will not receive an organ in time. On average, 22 people die each day in the United States while waiting for a transplant. The conversation will start at 10:30 a.m., and though walk-ins are welcome, you can also reserve a seat by using the contact information included below.

Gov. Kim Reynolds made a special, digital appearance, speaking to the more than 300 people who attended the fourth annual IKM-Manning GALA last Saturday at the Hausbarn Konferenz Centre in Manning. She recognized the district and the communities that support STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education. IKM-Manning has led the state, in not only the programming they are able to offer students, but in their ability to bring business, community and school together to fund these efforts. Organizers say that to date, more than $90,000 has been raised, but they are not done yet as sponsorships will be taken up to May 31 and will be added to that initial tally. In all there were more than 150 silent and live auction items sold, raising $46,000 between the two. The raffle raised over $3,000 and there were 57 bottles of wine sold in just one hour, adding another $1,150 to the night’s total. To date, the GALA has raised and distributed $220,000 to various programs, including Pint-sized Science, First Lego League, Jr., Project Lead the Way and Making STEM Connections. The Governor’s video along with more details on ways to obtain more information on how to support the IKM-Manning GALA can be found below.

IKM-Manning Gala fetches $90K

4/11/2018

PictureIKM-Manning Superintendent Trevor Miller speaks at this year’s IKM-Manning Gala.
Carroll Daily Times Herald, Rebecca McKinsey

Annual school fundraising event features men in dresses, familiar table-runner bidding frenzyOnce a night of live music, science presentations, food and booze, auctions and just a bit of cross-dressing came to a close this weekend, the IKM-Manning Community School District’s parents, educators and supporters had once again raked in almost six figures for the district.
The fourth annual IKM-Manning Gala was held Saturday at the German Hausbarn Konferenz Centre in Manning. The event, which rotates between some of the district’s communities — it has been held in Irwin and Manilla in the past — raises funds for STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) programming as well as broader “21st-century learning” initiatives at the IKM-Manning Community School District. This year’s event, at last count, raised about $90,000.
The past three events combined raised more than $200,000 for the district.
Of that, about $170,000 so far has been distributed back to the schools in grants that have helped fund a 3-D printer, “genius kits,” stand-up desks, iPads, STEM kits, software and curriculum, entirely new classes and more, with the rest to be distributed in the future.
A dinner catered by Lidderdale Country Store was served at the event, which also featured live music from Harlan-based rock and country cover band Mighty Mayhem.
As with past galas, silent and live auctions that featured many items made by STEM students at the schools or related to STEM initiatives greatly increased the evening’s fundraising take.
Local “celebrities” — Andy Eischeid, Bob Vonnahme, Larry Hagedorn and Ridge Muhlbauer — donned dresses and strutted their stuff to model and sell four purses, which in total raised $825 during the live auction.
Other big sellers were a metal flower stand created by IKM-Manning senior Austin Ahrenholtz, a 10-by-12 yard shed that will be built by students and a travel voucher for a trip to Cabo, all of which sold for $3,000 each.
And the star of the live auction, as it has been each year, was an inconspicuous IKM-Manning Wolves-printed cloth table runner, just a few feet across. In what has become a Gala tradition, attendees bid on the item and then returned it for another round of bidding. The process has grown to include dozens of “bidders” who pay for the item but go home without it so that it can be brought out again the following year.
This year, about 30 people contributed to the funds brought in through the table runner, raising $6,250 in about 10 minutes. Overall, the piece of cloth has raised more than $12,000 for the district.
Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds, who has raved about IKM-Manning’s STEM programs in the past, was unable to attend the Gala but recorded a video to be played at the event.
“Your investment of time, talents and treasures on Main Street, in local businesses and especially in education are preparing the next generation to lead small-town Iowa — and that’s so important, because we know strengthening rural Iowa starts right here and is reinforced through these types of events,” Reynolds said. “Your ongoing collaboration between businesses, the community and the school empowers IKM-Manning’s young people to strive for the skills that they need to succeed.”
IKM-Manning educators spoke to the crowd about ways past Gala funds have benefited their classes, including through the creation of a class that has students work directly with local businesspeople, plans for a “makerspace” at the middle school that would allow students to create a variety of items and complete a number of projects, a unit on the forces of flight for elementary-school students that culminate in the creation and test-flying of gliders and more.
“Without all your guys’ donations and hard work to support the community, we wouldn’t be able to do all this,” IKM-Manning Superintendent Trevor Miller said.
