The Germans of Manning proved they really know how to throw a St. Patrick’s Day party with more than 350 attendees at the first annual chili and rib cook off last Saturday, March 17. More than $14,000 was raised for the benefit of Manning Hausbarn Heritage Park from the revelers at the Hausbarn Konferenz Centre, who ranged in ages from four to 80+ years old. More than 30 gallons of chili from 14 different cooks was sampled and voted on by ticket holders and judges, as were 120 racks of ribs prepared by 17 area BBQ masters. The fundraising event included 30 silent auction items which raked in over $3,000 and 20 delectable desserts that were auctioned off for more than $3,000 as well. In the rib competition, one local team captured the “unicorn” of a perfect score from all six judges, including rankings from Certified Barbecue Judge, Dr. Dave Nystrom, and Kansas City Barbecue Society Judge, Dr. PJ Greteman. That first place prize went to Mel Jackson and his “Jackson 5” entry. Second place went to Lucas Deiber and third to Eric White. When it came to People’s Choice, there was a similarity in the selected winners, but some differences in their rankings. Eric White, with Barrel Smoke BBQ, took first place in that competition, Mel Jackson came in second and Lucas Deiber third. Deiber had the distinct honor of placing in two food categories, going home with a first place finish in the judge’s selection for chili. Barb Sturm placed second and James McKinney came in third. Eric White’s name resurfaced on the chili side with a first place People’s Choice selection, followed by Barb Sturm in second and Doc Bob Vonnahme in third.

Manning Grocery Store Acquired By Nick Graham, Once Recognized As America’s Youngest Grocer

The local grocery store in Manning has been a cornerstone at the intersection of Highway 141 and West Street for decades, and actually changed hands in June of 2013. Manning residents, Amy Osborne and Dawn Lorenzen purchased the property from Garrett Littlejohn, and today (Tuesday) Osborne confirmed that the pair has sold the business.
In 2006, Graham made national headlines as America’s youngest grocer when he purchased his hometown store in Truman, Minn. at the age of 17. He now owns stores in Rolfe, Rockwell City, Rockwell, Manson and Ackley, and Osborne says he is very aware of the needs in small town Iowa.
Osborne adds that it is unusual to have a previous owner remain in the general manager position, but she and Lorenzen are grateful Graham is willing to work with them in this transition.
She points out that days like today (Tuesday) are great examples of how vital hometown grocery stores are to small communities, especially for the elderly. You do not have to travel outside of town to get necessary items. They are also an integral piece in the support of many other community entities and efforts.
In addition, Osborne adds, people looking to move into a community assess available amenities, and a grocery store is a very positive one to have. Graham will take possession on April 1, but since that is the Easter holiday, the store will officially open under his ownership on Monday, April 2. There are not a lot of changes expected right away, but Osborne says she believes he may rebrand the store to his own, Heartland Markets. A new loyalty program will be eliminated at that time. Osborne thanks the community for their support, and encourages everyone to cash in their points before the end of the month. Carroll Broadcasting has reached out to Graham for comment, and will bring you an update from him in a future broadcast.

Teams from IKM-Manning School District have been competing in the seventh- through 12th-grade First Tech Challenge (FTC) Relic Recovery this school year. Twenty members of the middle and high school built and programmed robots that finish highly detailed challenges against teams from other schools. Over the course of the year, they have travelled the region to go head-to-head against others, utilizing engineering, math and science concepts. One of the teams, 10256, moved through the FTC Super Qualifier on Feb. 10 in Sioux City, with a consistent showing throughout the day and landing a ninth place finish, winning three of five alliance matches and scoring 517 points. That team, of Carter Irlmeier, Dylan Spies, Grant Behrens and Carter Spies, however, was able to move on to the Super Qualifier finals after being selected to be in an alliance with the Cherokee 8807 and Starmont 6661 teams. Their team lost in the opening round of finals, but performed well enough during the day to qualify for the State Championship held last weekend in Coralville. Team 10256 had an exceptional showing at state and ended their run in eighth place of the 24 teams in their division, and in the top 16 overall of the 48 teams that participated. The robots in the FTC Relic Recovery Challenge are designed to score glyphs into crypto boxes and complete rows, columns and ciphers, transfer relics to recovery zones, retrieve jewels, park on balancing stones and navigate specific parts of the playing field.
