June 1, 2008 – 125th Annual Schuetzen Verein King Shoot
Five Mile House, northwest of Manning
The Hayes Township Schuetzen Verein is the only traditional German King Shoot contest remaining in Iowa. Activities begin at 9AM, with polka dancing, lunch and shooting contests following to determine the King and ball throwing to determine the Queen. Contact Aaron Petersen of Westside for details.
June 8, 2008 - Great Western Youth Fishing Derby & Casting Contest
Great Western Park, southwest edge of Manning. Enjoy the DNR’s free fishing weekend. Ages 5-15 will compete for prizes for biggest fish and most fish caught in several age categories. Prizes awarded to everyone that wets a line! Meet at the Great Western Shelter house to fish from 1:00 to 3:00 pm. Bring your own fishing pole or borrow one of ours. No license needed! June 14, 2008 - Kinderfest – Manning’s 125th annual tradition will be held on Father's Day weekend, June 14, with several activities planned to make it even bigger and better than ever! It is believed to be the oldest heritage celebration in Iowa. This festival provides a day of old-fashioned family fun for children of all ages! This year will feature expanded rides for the children, more games and food booths in addition to a teen dance, 5K Fun Run, book fair, ball tournaments, state fair talent contest, royalty contests, big wheel races, water fights, an exciting new laser game, a new dodgeball tournament for teens and older, an appearance by the balloon brigade, and sensational raffle prizes including the popular Wii.
The annual parade is also being expanded along with the parade route. A stilt walker and costumed animals will walk through Main Street along with the children. Float entries are being enouraged by families, businesses and organizations. Floats will line up at the Catholic Church parking lot. Children will line up on north Main Street, as in previous years.
Jared the Incredible will perform for children in the park, and music will be provide by Ferd the Snerd, Brian Joens and Mead Music. The day will culminate with a dazzling fireworks display at dusk. June 29, 2008 – 6th Annual Midwest Old Iron Tractor Ride and Fun Day
Great Western Park, southwest edge of Manning
Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. at the Great Western Park with the drive starting at 9:30 am. This year’s tractor ride route will head north to the Five Mile House, covering 20 to 25 miles. Following the tractor ride, lunch and a variety of activities for the whole family will be enjoyed at the Great Western Park. Tractors 1960 and older may participate. August 1 & 2, 2008 – 6th Annual Hwy 141 Garage Sale - The Hwy 141 garage sale will stretch nearly 100 miles between the communities of Grimes and Manilla. Manning's annual city-wide garage sales will take place Aug. 1 & 2 in conjunction with the Hwy. 141 event. August 9, 2008 – 22nd Annual Show & Shine Car Show - This classic car show draws over 100 early - to - late model cars and pickups to Main Street Manning. Music, food and "car talk" fills the street. Registration begins at 9AM with judging of the 29 classes from 1-4PM. Food stands, sidewalk sales, and musical entertainment offer fun for the whole family. August 30, 2008 - Manning Fire Department 125th Quasquicentennial - Labor Day Weekend - Come to Manning and see the many displays of all makes and models of fire trucks (old and new), emergency vehicles, police cars, old apparatus, military vehicles, smoke house and other safety items. The Manning Fire Department welcomes all area Fire Departments to come and celebrate with us! There will be a beer garden on the tennis courts and DJ. September 6 & 7, 2008 – Five Mile House 125th Celebration - Five Mile House northwest of Manning - This 125th anniversary celebration will feature the Barry Boyce Orchestra of Omaha as Saturday’s entertainment. Enjoy polka dancing! Sunday’s activities will kick off with a pancake breakfast followed by a King Shoot in the afternoon. November 28, 2008 - Weihnachtsfest - Manning's 22nd annual festival will open with traditional ceremony Friday evening featuring a lighted parade, mass lighting of Main Street, living window displays, fireworks, music, marshmallow roasting, the arrival of Santa Claus and special children's activities. Holiday events continue through the weekend, providing special holiday events for all ages and the Christmas Walk through the City Park with beautiful lighted displays. Other lighted Christmas displays include Ohde Funeral Home on First Street and Merlyn Irlbeck’s residence one-half mile south of the east edge of Manning.
